Minimum Wage Board Secretariat

The Minimum Wage Board was established in 2015 by law. In 2022 July 1, Former President George M. Weah reconstituted and appointed the following persons with recommendation from the tripartite council: Prof. Geegbae A. Geegbae, (Economist) Cllr. C. Alexander B. Zoe, (Lawyer) Madam Theresa Viskinda, (Labour Relation Specialist) and Charles E. Collins, (Business, Industry & Commerce Specialist), while Jerome L.M. Kollie, Jr. (Social Policy Analyst & Administrator) was appointed by the Minister (Charles H. Gibson) to serve as Head of Secretariat (Director). Below are some functions and responsibilities of the board in keeping with Decent Work Acts of 2015:
  • The Minimum Wage Board shall from time to time review and recommend minimum wages that will promote the attainment of decent work in Liberia.
  • The Minimum Wage Board shall recommend minimum wages that apply to all employees whose employment is covered by this Act.
  • The Minimum Wage Board may recommend different minimum wages for different economic sectors and occupations.
  • The Minimum Wage Board may recommend minimum wages in the form of piece rates where appropriate to the customs and traditions in an industry.
  • In its first recommendations following the entry into force of this Act, the Minimum Wage Board shall give consideration to the most appropriate means and time frame for introducing new levels of minimum wages. Achievement
  1. The Board achieved in crafting Two (2) moratoria: Moratorium on Rent: stopping all real estate owners from increase rent since the new wage has not been recommended and place in an official gazette to be taken into consideration: Moratorium on Fees, stopping all school owners from increasing fees on tuition and registration. Those documents are on the President Desk to be announced as an Executive order.
  2. Two additional staff have been added to the Minimum Wage Board Secretariat: Blessing Suah as Deputy Director and Moses Kpaiseh as Clerk.
  3. The secretariat was able to purchases some ITC equipment and furniture.
  4. The retroactive payment for the board members were paid.
  5. The Board conducted a five (5) days symposium in Gbarnga City Bong County on the planned revision of the Minimum Wage.
  6. The Board was place in the 2024 annual budget with the amount of $150,000.00USD Prospect:
  • The Board envisions crafting new wages and said recommendation of the new wages be forwarded to the Chairman of the Board, the Minister of Labor to be public in an official gazette before the end of 2025 annual year;
  • The board envisions the recruitment of additional staff to help boost up the manpower demand of the board;
  • The board envisions the purchases of essential additional materials as: computers, printers, desks, vehicle, stationeries and other office equipment of the smooth functionary of the board.
